Paterson Yeshiva Reopens After Most of Yeshiva Hospitalized

Paterson, New Jersey: Today, the Rosh Yeshiva of Yeshiva Gedolah of Paterson, Harav Elya Chaim Swerdloff, welcomed back his Talmidim after the yeshiva was closed for a week following an outbreak of salmonella that affected all but two of the 54 Talmidim (As reported earlier on YIDVID). The food poisoning is believed to have originated from gefilte fish served at the yeshiva last Shabbos, Parshas Vayeirah. Causing most of the Bochurim went home after Shabbos to recover. Upon further investigation, it appeared that the gefilte fish had been clear of salmonella prior to being shipped by the fish company, and that the salmonella was present only after the fish had arrived on the yeshiva’s premises. Today, a large portion of the student body returned, though some 15 to 20 Bochurim still remain at home. Rav Swerdloff delivered a shiur today for the first time since last Friday. He also gave a powerful shmuess to his bochurim, quoting Gemaros and Medrashim to convey the seriousness of bittul Torah and the pain that it causes to the Ribono Shel Olam. Torah, the Rosh Yeshiva said, is the primary fashion of bringing joy to Hakadosh Boruch Hu, and bittul Torah, chas veshalom, has the opposite effect. He told the bochurim that although it is in the middle of the zman, it is now a fresh opportunity to return to their Limudim with a renewed vigor.
