THEY ARE ALL PICS OF TED RILEY FLOYD A.K.A. Nathan Levi

Kansas man accused of identity fraud is REALLY a GER

LAKEWOOD — Before his move here, or his name-change to Nathaniel James Levi, or his eventual arrest on identity fraud, Theodore Riley Floyd was a married Kansas man, raised Christian and aspiring to be Jewish, people who knew him said.

In 2000, he and his wife, Jamie, came to the Ahavath Achim Hebrew Congregation in Wichita and spent the next two years studying Torah law there until they were ordained as Orthodox Jews, the synagogue confirmed.

"This I would like to confirm definitely. Before he went to Lakewood, New Jersey, he was already (converted)," Rabbi Pinchas Aloof, the Floyds teacher at Ahavath Achim, said in a recent interview on the New York Jewish radio show, Talkline with Zev Brenner. "He acquired quite a bit of Torah learning in Kansas."

News of Floyd's conversion prior to his arrival in Lakewood put to rest the sweeping suspicion here among many Orthodox Jews that he was an impostor. Yet derision still remained over the fact that he apparently lied about his name and his Jewish heritage.

When he contacted Partners in Torah four years ago, Floyd, calling himself Levi, portrayed himself as coming from Jewish parents and living Orthodox most of his life, according to Rabbi Eli Gewirtz, the national director of the Lakewood-based organization, which has helped more than 20,000 people become familiar with their Jewish roots.

"There's always the bad apple. We have no idea why this person may have misrepresented himself," he said, expressing frustration at how such a publicized case had seemed to overshadow the great strides Partners has made.

Gewirtz said an assigned Partners' mentor spoke by telephone with Floyd for one hour each week for about four years while he was still in Kansas. "He wanted to study the Talmud," he said.

Eventually, a visit to Lakewood was arranged followed by a permanent move to the heavily Orthodox Forest Park section two to three years ago. There he flourished as a budding religious scholar until the morning of Feb. 21 when federal agents arrested him at his home.

Floyd is currently in federal custody in Kansas on a warrant charging that in 2002 he submitted a fraudulent passport application. Floyd had said he wished to make a pilgrimage to Israel upon his 2002 ordainment, Aloof said. The rabbi also said he had encouraged Floyd to find a larger and more Orthodox community to raise a family than the 300-family one in Kansas.

But when Aloof heard about the arrest, he had thought Floyd was in Israel, not Lakewood.

"This is disturbing to me," Aloof, now retired and living in Texas, said on the radio program. He declined several requests for a separate interview.

It is unclear when or why Floyd became Nathaniel Levi. The name, according to court and Navy records, is that of a man — now dead — who served in the Navy for less than two years in Florida on the USS Yosemite — an auxiliary boat that repaired destroyers — until his discharge in 1993. A Kansas court document cites Levi's death certificate was issued in California. The Navy lists his hometown as Bakersfield, Calif., the same town Floyd told Partners in Torah he was from. Floyd, as Levi, had also told his Lakewood brethren of his time fighting in the Gulf War. But the military's national personnel center in St. Louis has no record of Floyd serving in any branch.

Questions still circulate here about who he is. Reno County, Kan. Police say he stole a refrigerator in 2001. The Barton County Sheriff's Department also has an outstanding warrant on him for $2,500 for a misdemeanor theft charge.

There's little else. All that his mother, Vera Floyd, who now lives in Tucson, Ariz., offered was that he was raised a Christian, met his wife at a small county college in Kansas and "was our boy in Wichita."

She knew nothing of Jewish conversions or migrations to Lakewood. "We don't keep in touch much," she said, then added: "The last time I talked to him he told me that if anyone called about him to not say anything."

UPDATE: NATHAN LEVY

Lakewood, NJ Mr. Ted Floyd Is A Ger Tzedek

INTERVIEW on the Zev Brenner Show last night- With Rabbi that claims he converted The Floyds:

Lakewood, NJ - The following is an update to last weeks blockbuster news, in which We reported on a purportedly non-Jewish individual who had been living with his wife and children as a Torah-observant, Orthodox Jew in Lakewood's Jewish community for several years.

We have now learned that the man in question, currently being held by the authorities for attempted passport fraud and identity theft, did in fact undergo a conversion by an Orthodox rabbi together with his wife in 2002.

We have located and contacted Rabbi Pinchas Aloof, who was serving the synagogue Congregation Ahavat Achim in Wichita, Kansas at the time Mr. and Mrs. Floyd underwent conversion—and who has vouched in a telephone conversation with VIN from his Texas home for the Floyds' authentic Jewish status and kosher conversion. "It was 100% kosher with a Beis Din, I was there; they both went trough the whole process 'al pi halacha'" says Rabbi Aloof.

Rabbi Aloof, an Orthodox rabbi, also expressed complete shock upon learning of the controversy, of which he was completely unaware. "As far as that's concerned, there's nothing to be concerned about. He is a Yid," he said. The only matter the rabbi questioned was the story about Mr. Floyd's alleged Marrano background, which he dismissed as untrue. "He was 100% a goy," he said.

We have confirmed that Rabbi Aloof received his semicha from the Rabbinate of Israel, and is a Talmud of Yeshivas Chofitz Chaim of Baltimore.

YW:
The Ted Riley, Natan Levy, Lakewood Fiasco Continues
April 1, 2008

The shocking story which broke last week, regarding an individual who was living as a religious Jew in the heart of Lakewood, NJ and currently detained by Federal Authorities, is getting bigger by the day.

Besides for the many ‘rumors’ which are being spread around, it is now being reported that Mr. Ted Riley Floyd (AKA: Natan Levi) is actually a “Ger Tzedek”. As a matter-of-fact, a Rabbi Pinchas Aloof has come forward, and attested that he did in fact perform Geirus (conversions) on both Mr. and Mrs. Floyd. Although there is no doubt that this Rabbi did perform some type of conversion on them, it seems highly questionable as to how Kosher the conversion is.

On Monday evening, Rabbi Aloof appeared on the Zev Brenner Radio Show in New York, and publicly stated that he studied with the Floyd’s for two years - at his Congregation Ahavat Achim in Wichita, Kansas - prior to doing the conversions. Excerpts of this interview can be heard by clicking HERE. The rabbi stated that Mr. Floyd - who went by the name Natan Levi told him in the year 2000, that he wanted to become Jewish, with the idea that he was going to go on “Aliya” to Israel. Rabbi Aloof claims that he told Mr. Floyd that being that he was making Aliya to Israel, it would be best to do the conversion in the Holy Land. Mr. Floyd claimed that he was in contact with Israeli Consulate in Kansas City, and for whatever reasons he needed to do the conversion in the United States; to which Rabbi Aloof agreed.

The conversion was then done “Mikva Al Pi Din, Bais Din” etc. Shortly after, (in 2002), the Floyd family disappeared, leaving the Rabbi and his congregation to believe that they were in Israel - up until hearing the recent news that Mr. Floyd was detained by the authorities.

Rabbi Aloof said that what is very confusing is that, if the Floyd’s already had legitimate Geirus performed on them, why didn’t they just show the papers upon their arrival in Lakewood?

When asked what type of congregation it was, Rabbi Aloof says that his congregation is an “Orthodox Shul dating back to 1902, with a Shul, and a Mikva, etc. The years go by, and the Mechitza is removed, men sit on one side, women sit on the other side, and mixed seating is allowed in the center - as I’ve found in many Orthodox Shuls. That’s Golus. This is where we live today”, Rabbi Aloof told Zev Brenner.

“What puzzles me, is that if he’s in trouble in his hometown, why wouldn’t he contact the Rabbi”? Zev Brenner asked. “Maybe he knows that I retired, although he might be in contact with the Shul - which I’ll inquire about”.

“Do you know where he got the name Levy from, and did you give him the name Avraham ben Ahraham”, the Rabbi was asked. “I do not have the papers with me, and it’s going back a few years, but I believe the name given to Mr Floyd was Natan ben Avraham Avinu”, he answered. When asked how about the fact that he’s been claiming to be a Levy in Shul for the past few years, the Rabbi sounded shocked. “No way. As we know, a convert comes in as a Yisroel!”

The radio host then took a phone call from a “Yosef in Brooklyn”, who asked the following questions to the Rabbi:

Yosef in Brooklyn: “Were you once the Rabbi at Congregation Anshei Shalom in Delray-Beach Florida?”

Rabbi Aloof: “Yes I was. Going back maybe 20 years ago”.

Yosef in Brooklyn: “Did Mr. Floyd have a Bris Mila?”

Rabbi Aloof: “I believe he was already circumcised, and all we did was a ‘Hatofas Dam Bris’ on him”.

Yosef in Brooklyn: “Who were these other Rabbonim involved? You said that you had a Bais Din perform the Geirus on Mr. Floyd, who were these Rabbis?”

Rabbi Aloof: “They were members of the congregation. ‘People Yodeiya Sefer’.

Yosef in Brooklyn: “Can you give us the names of the people”?

Rabbi Aloof: “These are two people - elders of the congregation, whom we rely on.”

Yosef in Brooklyn: “I’m sitting here in Brooklyn, and it’s hard to imagine that this is a real Geirus, because he didn’t seem too sincere to me. This was done with ulterior motives possibly, and that would invalidate the entire Geirus. I’ve also noticed (from doing research on-line) that you have been the Rabbi in Conservative Shuls, which makes the whole thing very suspect to me that, since they are known to try and bring in members…..”

Rabbi Aloof: “Someone once asked me, what kind of Rabbi are you? My answer to him was: I am an Orthodox Rabbi that has to serve in a Conservative Congregation with Reformed members. And this is what we are faced with today. Not in Brooklyn, but in the ‘real-world’.

What casts even further question as to the motives of the Floyd’s, is their applications to the wonderful “Partners In Torah” organization. On those papers (which have been removed at the request of the organization), Mr. and Mrs. Levy BOTH wrote that their mothers and fathers were Jewish from birth! Additionally, Mr Floyd/Levy wrote that he grew up at Chabad in Bakersfield”. After doing some research, we learned that Chabad in Bakersfield was opened in 2002 [Click HERE to see Lubavitch.com on Bakersfield, CA].

The person at Partners in Torah who interviewed Mr. Floyd, wrote the following report:

“Grew up Chabad in Bakersfield. Were orthodox did shabbat and holidays and kept kosher. Went to day school all throughout. Joined the military, ended up in Florida. Now lives in Kansas, started a business, got married and got stuck there. Still orthodox, shomer shabbat, and kosher, and keep the holidays. Go to orthodox synagogue which is in practice conservative. Feels completely separated and standard in the middle of nowhere, hates where he lives and feels disconnected. Wants a partner who can help him from “going braindead” out there. He wants to study Shulchas Aruch and Gemara (Brachot). Sounded smart but a little down. Seems very analytical and rational. Already observant but really needs help staying connected. Any observant guy who can learn Gemara could be fine.”

In interviewing Mrs. Floyd, the following was written:

“Raised without any religious background at all. Parents are completely not practicing Met a nice Jewish boy at college. Learned everything she knows from him. Studied with a rabbi in Wichita for 2 years then he left. etc etc etc… Husband is sephardic Yemenite etc etc…

As is obvious from reading & listening to the above interview, reading the Partners in Torah papers, and the court documents (which can be seen by clicking HERE), it is obvious that this man does not seem to be a “Ger Tzedek” according to Orthodox standards. Regarding a possible Geirus which was done ‘Lichumra’ on Mrs. Floyd in Lakewood in the past few years,we has been told by credible sources that the Rov which did the conversion is not sure if it is Kosher - since this evidence is all coming out now. We is currently working on gathering additional photos, and other documents questioning this mans motives. What is also troubling is that Mr. Floyd still remains in custody - for crimes unknown. It is still possible, that further evidence will come along stating the contrary to what was concluded from the above information. If that does happen, you can be sure that we will cover the story accurately - as we have been until now.

It must be noted that the Sephardic community in Lakewood where Mr Levy/Floyd was a member, was never aware that he was possibly a Ger. All the community knew was that he was a Baal Teshuva - as was evident from the Partners In Torah documents. Never in their wildest dreams did they expect to end up with this fiasco on their hands.

[Please keep in mind that this federal investigation continues, and the point of this posting is just to give the reader an insight into the various pieces of information gathered by we]

YIDVID EXCLUSIVE: NATHAN LEVY SINGING!!!

THEY SAY HE WAS AN ARAB!!!

LAKEWOOD — The man Orthodox Jews here knew as Nathan Levi was a rising star among them, having in three short years gone from a religious layman to a Torah scholar capable of mentoring others, those close to him said.

The same man is now in a Kansas prison awaiting trial on federal identity fraud charges under the name "John A. Doe," according to court papers that list his real name as Ted Riley Floyd.

As news of Levi's sudden departure spread, feelings of betrayal consumed this intensely close-knit Orthodox enclave, with many raising doubts about the purported Jewish roots of the newcomer they had embraced as one of their own.

"We gave him the confidence and all the support he needed to feel comfortable and honored here. To find out he's pulling a scam on the community is heartbreaking," said Rabbi Ike Lewis of the Congregation of Etz Haim, where he had tutored Levi for three years. Lewis would only give his secular name out of concern for his safety.

Levi was arrested at his home on Forest Park Circle Feb. 21 by U.S. Department of State agents on a 2002 warrant for submitting a fraudulent passport application in Wichita, Kan., according to authorities. That day, a New Jersey magistrate judge released him on $100,000 bail on the condition that he receive mental health counseling and return to Kansas to face the charges, court papers stated.

On March 24, a U.S. District Court judge in Kansas jailed Levi after determining he was lying about his identity, according to the detention order. At that hearing, Levi said his real name was Ted Riley Floyd. The court "it appears that Defendant is not Nathaniel James Levi, and that Nathaniel James Levi is in fact deceased."

"We essentially told the judge we can't trust he'll show up every time in court, because we just don't know who this guy is," Jim Cross, of the U.S. Attorney's Office in Kansas, said.

Levi's next court hearing is May 12, with trial set to begin May 20, Cross said.

It remains unclear how truthful Levi was about his Jewish background or what ties he has in Wichita other than having in-laws there.
No rush to judgment

Some Orthodox leaders refrained from quick judgment.

"How can I say he betrayed us? Do we know these allegations are true?" Joseph Atles, a member of Lakewood's council of Jewish leaders, the Vaad, said Thursday. "I could not say that with a straight face. I hope he didn't take advantage of us."

Levi at some point contacted Partners in Torah, a Lakewood-based nonprofit group that helps people discover their Jewish heritage by matching them up with a volunteer mentor, Shalom Rosenberg, the group's national follow-up coordinator, said.

"We had no reason to believe he was being dishonest about anything," said Rosenberg, who would not elaborate on when or for how long Levi was involved with the organization, or what was unearthed.

Lewis said Levi was matched with a Partners in Torah mentor about three years ago and brought to Lakewood from Kansas for a visit. Having liked what he saw, the self-employed graphic designer decided to move his family here.

Several neighbors in the Forest Park section told of helping him and his wife, Jamie, with everything from stocking up groceries for the Sabbath to finding private Orthodox schools for their three or four young children.

"Have done so much for him, how should people feel now?" asked one Orthodox woman who, like the other residents interviewed, asked that her name be withheld due to concerns of exposure. "They're really hurt. It's like a slap in the face."

Once settled, Levi tackled his role as a rabbinical student with vigor, spending long hours at the yeshiva university, Beth Medrash Govoha, and taking classes at Etz Haim, which was within walking distance of his home.

Lewis described Levi as a "very powerful" intellectual and a "multi-talented" tradesman who could switch effortlessly from religious scribe to construction worker to graphic artist.

"He excelled in his studies to a level where he was mentoring others," the rabbi said. "He was an unbelievable character."
Variety of skills

During their time together, Lewis would receive only random snippets of information about Levi's past. While doing some handiwork for the synagogue when he first arrived, for instance, Levi told of his time as a sniper in the Persian Gulf war, where he supposedly was rewarded for making a kill shot from a mile away. He also claimed to have worked construction in Kansas.

A MySpace page believed to be his describes Levi, 34, as originally from Sacramento, Calif., of Middle Eastern ethnicity and partner in Levy Design Solutions, which court papers also list him as a co-owner for eight years. His favorite bands are the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and Bob Marley, according to the page.

In fact it was the breadth of Levi's skills and interests that first aroused suspicions from Lewis and his colleagues, though not enough to break what they saw as an obligation to assist him.

"From the beginning there was doubt, and with this doubt it wasn't a great shock," Lewis said of his reaction to the recent developments.

Court documents place Levi as a flight risk who has two additional outstanding Kansas warrants for misdemeanor thefts in Barton and Reno counties. It also states that New Jersey authorities have suggested that Levi may be facing additional, more serious, charges there. Those potential charges were not confirmed.

A New Jersey court release form cites Barak Levy and Jamie Levi as custodians of Nathan Levi while heading to Kansas. Calls to each of their listed phone numbers were not returned. A person answering the door at Barak Levy's Lakewood residence declined to comment. Knocks on the doors of both Levi's home and the address listed as his graphic design location went unanswered.

Hasidic boy attacked near firebombed Mtl. school

The beating of a Quebec Hasidic boy has been caught by surveillance footage just outside the Skver Toldos Jewish School, the same institute firebombed last September.

Jewish groups said the attacker likely targeted the 16-year-old victim because he was Hasidic, but police have said there is no evidence to suggest the incident was a hate crime.

"It's just devastating to have events continually happening to the cultural communities in Quebec, and everybody pretending this is in the normal course of events," Jeffrey Boro, President of Quebec's Canadian Jewish Congress, told CTV Montreal.

The attack happened in broad daylight Thursday afternoon. Security footage shows a man in a white shirt approaching the victim and then punching him in the face.

Police have not called the incident a hate crime, partly because they say there were no threats made against the boy.

Witnesses of the attack called 911 and police arrested a 24-year-old suspect getting into a taxi.

According to police, the suspect said he allegedly attacked the boy because he mistakenly thought he had flirted with his girlfriend.

But Boro said the attacker may have targeted the youth because of his appearance.

"Considering the victim's dress, it is reasonable to fear that the crime was motivated by hate," he said in a press release.

He added: "While one boy bore the physical brunt of the attack, the entire Jewish community feels the pain. We extend our sympathies and support to the family of the young victim."

The suspect is expected to appear in court on July 9.

Jewish man removed from airplane for praying

Some fellow passengers are questioning why an Orthodox Jewish man was removed from an Air Canada Jazz flight in Montreal last week for praying.

The man was a passenger on a Sept. 1 flight from Montreal to New York City when the incident happened.

The airplane was heading toward the runway at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport when eyewitnesses said the Orthodox man began to pray.

"He was clearly a Hasidic Jew," said Yves Faguy, a passenger seated nearby. "He had some sort of cover over his head. He was reading from a book.

"He wasn't exactly praying out loud but he was lurching back and forth," Faguy added.

The action didn't seem to bother anyone, Faguy said, but a flight attendant approached the man and told him his praying was making other passengers nervous.

"The attendant actually recognized out loud that he wasn't a Muslim and that she was sorry for the situation but they had to ask him to leave," Faguy said.

The man, who spoke neither English nor French, was escorted off the airplane.

Air Canada Jazz termed the situation "delicate," but says it received more than one complaint about the man's behaviour.

The crew had to act in the interest of the majority of passengers, said Jazz spokeswoman Manon Stewart.

"The passenger did not speak English or French, so we really had no choice but to return to the gate to secure a translator," she said.

The airline is not saying if the man was told he was not allowed to pray, but a spokesperson said the man was back on board the next flight to New York.

Jewish leaders in Montreal criticized the move as insensitive, saying the flight attendants should have explained to the other passengers that the man was simply praying and doing no harm.

Hasidic Rabbi Ronny Fine said he often prays on airplanes, but typically only gets curious stares.

"If it's something that you're praying in your own seat and not taking over the whole plane, I don't think it should be a problem," said Fine.

The Jewish group B'nai Brith Canada has offered to help give Air Canada crews sensitivity training.

Jews Try To Construct Great Wall Of Stupidity

eruvHow I missed this one, I’ll never know. So thanks to +++++ for the tip.

A group of Orthodox Jews in Los Angeles is trying to erect an eruv near a synagogue on Venice Beach’s boardwalk. An eruv is essentially a magic enclosure that allows Orthodox Jews to circumvent certain oppressive traditions within its confines. For instance, Jews are not allowed to perform some basic activities like pushing a stroller outside on the shabbat, but slap together an eruv and you’re good to go.

The proposal calls for several miles worth of 200-pound test fishing line to be strewn about the Venice Beach Boardwalk area. Typically in cities, eruvs are tied to existing structures like telephone poles, but a beach is quite different. The Jews suggest that the line be tied to existing lamp poles and signs. To fill the void in certain parts of the beach, 20-foot poles would be planted to provide the necessary connection.

Needless to say, many people are not too keen on the idea. Some are concerned about the poles being an eyesore, while others are concerned about the impact on local birds and their nests. Others find the use of public property for religious reasons troublesome.

orthodox jewsMy only beef with this issue is it’s utter stupidity and the willingness for Jews to tolerate it. They obviously don’t like the archaic rules, so instead of utilizing common sense and vanquishing them, they subvert them by finding loopholes in the system… as if that’s ok with God. Why can’t the Jews just admit that some of their traditions are outdated and just plain silly? For instance here’s a snippet from the article about a Rabbi’s concern for a family’s child who can’t go outside on the Shabbat:

We have a family with a child in a wheelchair and it’s not just getting to synagogue for her, it’s getting outdoors. It is a terrible thing for an 8-year-old.

So this kid is forced to stay indoors on Saturday because of some insane demand from God? Seriously, what the hell kind of God doesn’t want your wheelchair-ridden child to be outside, enjoying the glorious natural beauty that he supposedly created!

YIDVID EXCLUSIVE: NATHAN LEVY SINGING!!!

THEY SAY HE WAS AN ARAB!!!

The picture is taken at a Hachnosas Sefer Torah - He (the goy) wrote a letter in the Torah!
